Samford University Cumberland School of Law hosted the 31st annual Thurgood Marshall Symposium which recognized the 70th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education. Victor Jones, senior counsel at the NAACP’s Legal Defense Fund Defense, served as the keynote speaker.

Preserving Black History: Samford’s Stories of Courage and Legacy
Black Alabamians have shaped the state's history since its founding in 1819. Samford University, established as Howard College in 1841, witnessed this history unfold, from enslaved labor on campus to the integration of Black students in the 1960s and the dedication of the Racial Reconciliation Memorial in 2022.

Samford Celebrates Black History Month
February is Black History Month and Samford University plans to mark the occasion with several events for students, faculty and community members to enjoy. Singleton Wins Award for Groundbreaking Research on Black Journalism
William Singleton, assistant professor of communication and media at Samford, received the Newspaper Research Journal's Best Article Award for his work, “Must I follow the script? Professional objectivity, journalistic roles and the Black community journalist.”

Samford Alumna and Communication Studies Faculty Member Collaborate on Body Liberation Publication
Samford University’s Department of Communication and Media recently celebrated a unique scholarly collaboration between Niya Pickett Miller, assistant professor of communication studies, and Samford alumna Erin Basinger, associate professor of communication studies at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.

Samford University Honors First-Generation College Students
On Nov. 8, Samford University observed National First-Generation College Student Day, joining colleges across the country in honoring the experiences and achievements of first-generation students. The Office of Student Success and Diversity, along with the First-Gen Club, hosted an event from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Ben Brown Plaza. Students, faculty and staff were invited to stop by for free snacks, fun activities and valuable resources dedicated to supporting first-generation students on their educational journeys.

Samford University Welcomes the 2024-25 Ragland Scholars Cohort
The Ragland Scholars are a select group of students committed to honoring Elizabeth Sloan Ragland, the first African American woman to integrate campus housing at Samford University in 1969. In her memory, the Ragland Scholars program creates intentional community that connects multicultural student leaders with an enriched campus experience.
