Samford University’s Cumberland School of Law will explore privacy and data security at a symposium, “Practicing Law in the Age of Surveillance and Hackers,” Friday, Feb. 27.

Sponsored by Cumberland’s American Journal of Trial Advocacy, the program in Robinson Hall law building is free and open to the public. Following registration check in at 8:30 a.m., the program will start at 9 a.m. and conclude at 12:30 p.m.

The program will include a broad and theoretical exploration of privacy and data security for legal practitioners. Topics will address privacy and confidentiality related issues in the era of mass surveillance and the future of privacy and data security in the digital age.

James R. Silkenat, immediate past president of the American Bar Association, will present the keynote address. He is a partner in the New York office of Sullivan & Worcester.

Two panels will feature speakers who represent various aspects of the symposium topic. Cumberland professor Woodrow Hartzog, an internationally recognized expert in the areas of privacy, media and robotics law, will moderate both panels.

Panel I will focus on “Discovery and Cooperation:  Attorney Obligations when Interacting with Others."  

Panelists are Brian Levine, national CHIP (Computer Hacking and Intellectual Property) coordinator, U.S. Department of Justice; Sarah Hutchins, attorney, Parker Poe Adams & Bernstein, Charlotte, North Carolina; Mark Jenkins, associate general counsel and executive vice president of knowledge strategy at cicayda, Nashville, Tennessee; and Dera Nevin, director of eDiscovery services at Proskauer Rose, New York, New York.

Panel II’s topic is “Protecting Client Data in an Age of Uncertainty.”

Those panelists are Carrie Goldberg, C.A. Goldberg, PLLC, Brooklyn, New York; Drew Simshaw, information security law and policy analyst at Indiana University in Indianapolis, Indiana; and Harvey Rishikof, advisory committee chair, ABA standing committee on law and national security.
