Sigma Chi took the coveted sweepstakes trophy Feb. 16 in Samford University's 2008 Step Sing.
Step Sing is an annual student production which dates to the early 1950s.
Sigma Chi's theme, "The Original Fraternity" focused on Jesus and the 12 disciples. The group also won the judges award and the participants award for excellence in music.
Participant awards are peer awards voted by members of the groups participating in Step Sing.
Dudes-a-Plenty, an independent men's group which organizes just to perform in Step Sing, was first runner-up with "Magic." Dudes-a-Plenty won the sweepstakes award in 2007 and 2005.
Phi Mu, women's sorority, was second runner-up with an act entitled "Se7en" about the seven deadly sins. The group also won the judges award for excellence in theme and participants awards for best overall and best choreography.
Alpha Delta Pi sorority won the judges award for excellence in choreography, and Pi Kappa Phi fraternity won the participants award for best costume.
Alpha Omicron Pi sorority was recognized for raising the most money for the 2008 Step Sing philanthropy, Cystic Fibrosis Foundation. Each year participating groups select philanthropy to support as the community service component of Step Sing.
