Kari Knowlton

When Kari Knowlton ’90 joined the inaugural committee of the Nashville regional alumni chapter, she was simply looking for a way to give back after Samford University gave her so much. Now serving as the chair of the committee, she has seen the chapter grow and meaningful relationships flourish among fellow graduates in her area.

“I feel like I am with family when we are together because we have Samford in common,” Knowlton said.

After being heavily involved during her years on campus, Knowlton knew she wanted to continue to support Samford as an alumna. The Nashville chapter allows for that support to be channeled through events and fellowship with other graduates.

The chapter hosts two major events a year, sponsored by the Samford University Alumni Association. They host pop-up events around Samford sports and, for the last two years, have hosted Step Sing watch parties, which have allowed them to invite Samford parents and even future students into their community. Like other alumni chapters, the group also makes a concentrated effort to welcome new graduates and invite them into its Music City community.

Knowlton said she loves these experiences and has seen relationships develop as a direct result of their efforts. She recalled a story about two young women who came to an event alone and, after getting to know one another, committed to helping each other find a church in Nashville by going together every week.

“The camaraderie of putting on your Samford blue and red and going to an event is something that can only really be experienced in person. Your only expense is your time, and you get so much more out of it in return,” Knowlton said.

Samford is proud to have more than 25 regional alumni chapters and clubs that connect graduates with fellow Bulldogs living and working in their cities. The leaders of these groups decide how to create unique experiences for alumni, and with the Alumni Association's support, they are well-equipped to lead their groups while managing their career responsibilities.

Applications for leadership positions within a regional alumni chapter or club are open until June 30. Click the link below to see the 27 cities where Samford alumni are building community across the country.
