Samford University dedicated the new Buck Brock Commons in honor of Harry “Buck” Brock III on the morning of October 31, 2023. Since Brock faithfully served Samford both as a trustee and administrator over the years, this space was named in gratitude for his service.
The ceremony was attended by Samford faculty, staff, students, trustees, friends and family of Brock, all to pay homage to a pillar of the Samford community. Remarks were made by SGA President James Jefferson, President Beck A. Taylor, Hoar Construction CEO Rob Burton and Samford Board of Trustees chair Honorable Karon Bowdre.
All four reminisced of Brock’s dedication service to Samford, as well as his leadership over milestone projects such as the building of Cooney Hall or the transformation of the former Southern Progress corporate headquarters into the state-of-the-art facility for the College of Health Sciences.
President Beck A. Taylor referred to this common area as the “living room” of Samford, a space where he’s seen students gather to study, pray, laugh or prepare to enjoy a meal at the Caf. This space perfectly represents the care and compassion Brock holds for Samford students. President Taylor commented this ceremony ensures Brock’s name will stand prominent for generations of students who will enjoy this space.
“Buck took special delight in seeing students enjoying themselves on Samford’s campus, and many of the capital projects he oversaw contributed directly to Samford’s strong community,” shared Taylor. “To name this space in the Beeson University Center for Buck, a space where students are often seen enjoying each other’s company, is particularly appropriate. We are delighted to honor Buck in this way.”
The Samford University Chorale performed the alma mater, and the spirit of the lyrics, “with sounding glories of the past, with plans and future dreams” permeated every kind word and fond memory shared. Chairwoman Bowdre called the ceremony “a wonderful opportunity for a wonderful man with a wonderful family who has meant so much to Samford for decades.”
Before unveiling the plaque that will adorn the walls of Buck Brock Commons, the honoree himself stepped to the lectern for and expressed thanks, saying, “This is an honor. It’s wonderful to be associated in this way with the students.”
He then turned his attention to current students in attendance. Even in a ceremony honoring him, Brock showed the true God-given selflessness of his character.
“This is about y’all,” shared Brock. “Samford’s mission and vision is all because of you. Everyone in this room wouldn’t have a job if it wasn’t for you. You’re the reason we’re here.”
Update: Harry “Buck” Brock III passed away on November 3, 2023. Our current sadness is offset, even if by a small amount, knowing that our last time with Mr. Brock was such a meaningful occasion for him and for all of us. We also take comfort knowing of Mr. Brock’s deep faith in Christ. To help continue the Brock legacy, please consider giving to the Buck and Nancy Brock Endowed Scholarship that supports students in the School of Public Health.
