Samford University’s Healthcare Ethics and Law Institute (HEAL) will examine “Eliminating Health-care Delivery Disparities: An Ethical Quagmire?” during its 10th annual conference Friday, April 8.

The conference—sponsored by Samford’s McWhorter School of Pharmacy—is designed to help Alabama institutional ethics committees and those involved in patient care with today’s most pressing ethics and law issues and problems.  It will meet in Brock Forum of Dwight Beeson Hall at Samford from 8:25 a.m. until 3:45 p.m.

Visiting speakers will include David Satcher, M.D., Ph.D., former surgeon general of the United States and director of the Satcher Health Leadership Institute in Atlanta, Ga.;  Robert Veatch, Ph.D., a pioneer of medical ethics and professor at the Kennedy Institute of Ethics and at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C.; and Gregory E. Pence, philosophy professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

Joseph O. Dean, Jr., Ph.D., former dean of Samford’s McWhorter School of Pharmacy, will speak at the 10th anniversary luncheon.  Dean was instrumental in the founding of HEAL in 1999.

Drs. Satcher, Veatch and Dean will receive Pellegrino Medals for their contributions to healthcare ethics.  The medal is named for Dr. Edmund D. Pellegrino, the first recipient of a lifetime achievement award from the American Society for Bioethics and Humanities.  The medal has been presented to world renowned clinical ethicists over the 10 years of the Institute’s existence.  Dr. Pence received a medal in 2006.

HEAL Director Bruce D. White will present a case study, “The Family from Hell,” and will provide closing comments.
