The Alabama Supreme Court and the Court of Criminal Appeals will hear oral arguments at Samford University Thursday morning, Oct. 6, in Wright Center Concert Hall.
The event, sponsored by Samford’s Cumberland School of Law and Birmingham Bar Foundation, is open to the public. Call to order will be at 9:10 a.m.
At 9:30 a.m., the nine-member Supreme Court will hear arguments in G.E. Capital Aviation Services, Inc., n/k/a GE Capital Aviation Services LLC v. Pemco World Air Services, Inc., and Alabama Aircraft Industries, Inc. Chief Justice Charles R. Malone, who was appointed to the post in August by Alabama Governor Robert Bentley, will preside in the business contract case.
The five-member Court of Criminal Appeals will hear arguments in a capital murder case, Kevin Andre Towles v. State of Alabama, at 11 a.m. Samuel H. Welch is presiding judge.
About 800 students from 18 area high schools will attend the sessions, which will adjourn at 12 noon. In recent weeks, Birmingham Bar Foundation board members have visited the schools to discuss the cases to be heard and explain oral arguments and appellate procedure.
Participating schools are Alabama School of Fine Arts, Cornerstone Christian School, Evangel Classical Christian School, Indian Springs School, Tabernacle Christian School, and Center Point, Gardendale, Holy Family Cristo Rey, Homewood, Hoover, Huffman, McAdory, Oak Grove, Oneonta, Spain Park, Tarrant, Vestavia Hills and Wenonah high schools. Cumberland law students and undergraduate students at Samford and other area colleges will also attend.
Samford’s Wright Center will also be the setting that day at 2 p.m. for the Alabama Court of Civil Appeals to hear oral arguments on an appeal related to Trinity Medical Center’s proposed move from Montclair Road to the unfinished HealthSouth Corporation digital hospital building on U.S. 280 in Birmingham.
