Samford University debaters Ashley Streat of Leesburg, Ga., and John Wilkerson of Macon, Ga., were named top speakers of the year in their divisions at a recent South-Central regional debate tournament held at Georgia State University.

Streat was named the region’s varsity speaker of the year in recognition of her overall performance during the 2003-04 debate season, which began in September.

Wilkerson was named junior varsity speaker of the year for his overall performance. He was also named top speaker in the junior varsity division at the tournament, which included more than 60 teams.

Wilkerson and teammate David Li of Vestavia Hills compiled a 6-1 record to win the junior varsity championship at the event.

Streat and teammate Jon Mann of Florence tied for fifth place in the varsity division.

The tournament included all intercollegiate debate teams in nine southern states.
