Cumberland School of Law National Trial Team Wins Regional Championship of the American Association of Justice Student Trial Advocacy Competition for Fifth Consecutive Year
In March, Samford University Cumberland School of Law’s National Trial Team traveled to Chicago, where they won the Midwest Region of the American Association of Justice Student Trial Advocacy Competition and will advance to nationals in Atlanta in April. The win marks the fifth straight year that Cumberland has won the regional competition.

Cumberland School of Law National Mediation Team Wins American Bar Association Regional Mediation Competition
Samford University Cumberland School of Law’s National Mediation Team won the American Bar Association’s Representation in Mediation Regional Competition, March 1-2, and will advance to the national tournament in Chicago.

Cumberland School of Law National Trial Team Wins Regional Championship of National Trial Competition
In February, Samford University Cumberland School of Law’s National Trial Team won Region 8 of the National Trial Competition. With the win, the Cumberland team will advance to nationals in Houston, Texas, in April. This win secured the 13th win in the last 17 years for Cumberland.

Cumberland School of Law National Moot Court Team Wins Regional Round of National Appellate Advocacy Competition
In February, Samford University Cumberland School of Law’s National Moot Court Team traveled to San Francisco to compete in one of six regional competitions of the American Bar Association’s (ABA) National Appellate Advocacy Competition (NAAC). Cumberland’s team won the regional, advancing to the national competition in Chicago in April.

Annual Thurgood Marshall Symposium Recognizes 70th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education
Samford University Cumberland School of Law hosted the 31st annual Thurgood Marshall Symposium which recognized the 70th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education. Victor Jones, senior counsel at the NAACP’s Legal Defense Fund Defense, served as the keynote speaker.

Cumberland School of Law Symposium Addresses Environmental Regulation in a Diminished Administrative State
On Jan. 31, Samford University Cumberland School of Law hosted the inaugural Cumberland Law Land Use and Natural Resources Law Center Symposium, in partnership with Cumberland’s Continuing Legal Education department. The half day conference highlighted the development of private governance, environmental markets, and taxation policies to fill environmental regulatory gaps.

Samford University Cumberland School of Law has received a $1 million gift in support of the school’s nationally recognized advocacy training program. The generous gift from Dee Miles, JD ’89, and his wife, Sandra, will help ensure the program remains a pillar of excellence in advocacy education for years to come.

Brannon P. Denning, the Starnes Professor of Law at Samford University Cumberland School of Law, has been announced as a recipient of the 2025 Thomas M. Cooley Book Prize by Georgetown Law’s Center for the Constitution. The annual award recognizes exceptional books, and their authors, that advance our understanding of, and commitment to, the Constitution.
