Are there prerequisite courses to apply for this program?
No, there are no prerequisite courses required to apply. However, both the architecture and interior design programs include an art-based foundation during the first year, which students must complete before moving forward in either major.
Do I need a minimum GPA to enter the major?
No, students are admitted directly into the program once the major is declared. To remain in the major, architecture and interior design students must maintain a GPA of at least 2.5 in the major. The A&ID department enforces a D-repeat policy for all major courses.
Can I study abroad as part of this program?
Yes, the department highly values and encourages study abroad experiences. The best time to study abroad is during May term or summer. Fall or Spring study-abroad participation is possible, but it may hinder course sequencing. Students progress through the major in a cohort model.
Can I customize the program or choose concentrations/emphases?
No, students have the freedom to explore various aspects of design through coursework and projects. However, neither architecture nor interior design offers official concentrations or emphases.
What careers do graduates of this major pursue?
Graduates pursue careers across the built environment, including licensed architect, commercial and residential design and project management. Both fields also offer specialty areas such as sustainability, historic preservation, hospitality, furniture, lighting and more. Many graduates also pursue careers in academia or policy.
Is this program accredited?
The Interior Design program is accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA). The Architecture program is currently in the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB) accreditation process, with an anticipated completion in the 2026-2027 academic year.
Is there a secondary admissions process for this program?
No. There is no secondary admissions process.
Is a portfolio required for admission to this program?
A portfolio is required for scholarship consideration only.
