An article by Samford journalism and mass communication professor Betsy Emmons–“Legitimizing the journey: National Signing Day and the public relations pseudo-event as high school athlete cultural moment"–was accepted for publication by the academic journal Sport in Society.

In addition to her teaching Emmons is an active and nationally-accredited public relations professional, and serves as faculty adviser for the Public Relations Student Society of America's (PRSSA) Samford chapter. Her research interests include social media in sports, and sports journalism, and she is active in AEJMC's sports communication interest group.
