During the 2008-2009 academic year, Samford students successfully competed for a number of prestigious national fellowships and scholarships. Their accomplishments are a tribute both to the quality of our students and the knowledge they've cultivated by working closely with Samford's faculty members. A list of the students and their accomplishments follows:
Jonathan Coley (Junior - Political Science) was a finalist for a Truman Fellowship. This award recognizes college juniors with outstanding leadership skills who seek a career in the government, nonprofit or educational sectors. Awards provide financial support for graduate study, leadership development and association with other students who are dedicated to making an impact on society through public service.Daniel Childs (Junior - Biochemistry) received an Honorable Mention from the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Program. This program recognizes exceptionally talented students of mathematics, natural sciences and engineering who intend to pursue careers in these fields. Funding is provided to cover tuition costs during the last two years of the students' undergraduate education.
Katherine Veach Dyer (Class of 2006 - Religion) and Joel Davis (Class of 2005 - Theory and Composition) were selected as finalists for the the Lilly Graduate Fellows Program. This program supports exceptionally well qualified Protestant and Catholic young men and women who have bachelor degrees from LFP Network Schools and who are interested in becoming teacher-scholars at church-related colleges and universities in the United States. Successful candidates receive stipends during up to three years of graduate-level study in their chosen field.
