Samford University’s School of Public Health welcomed Alabama State Health Officer Scott Harris, MD, as the inaugural speaker in its new Dean’s Seminar Series.

Hosted by Interim Dean Suresh Mathews, PhD, the series is designed to bring leading voices in public health and health care to campus, offering students, faculty and staff the opportunity to engage with experts on critical issues facing the state and nation.

Harris shared insights from his role with the Alabama Department of Public Health, where he has led the state’s response to a wide range of challenges. His presentation underscored both the opportunities and complexities of protecting and improving population health in Alabama, from addressing rural health disparities to preparing for future emergencies.

Mathews emphasized the importance of the series as a way to connect students with the realities of the profession while encouraging dialogue that leads to collaboration and innovation. “This series provides a valuable platform for our students to learn directly from professionals who are shaping health outcomes across our communities,” he said. “We are honored to have Dr. Harris launch this important initiative.”

The Dean’s Seminar Series will continue throughout the academic year with additional leaders exploring emerging trends, research and policies in public health.
