J.D Payne

For nearly three decades, J.D. Payne has researched and taught evangelism. Now, the Thomas Welby Bozeman Chair of Christian Ministry at Samford University’s School of the Arts compiles that wealth of experience into his new book, Understanding Evangelism. The comprehensive textbook is designed to equip Christ followers for gospel witness around the world.

“Authors are artists who sculpt words,” Payne said. “Like all artists, authors are shaped by life experiences over time. The Lord has graciously allowed me to serve in a variety of roles over the years. Because of these opportunities, I believe I am able to understand evangelism from differing contemporary viewpoints. This vantage point assists in asking, researching and answering the relevant questions being asked by leaders in the Church.”

The book spans biblical and theological foundations, church history, cultural contexts, practical application and contemporary definitions of evangelism. Payne emphasizes evangelism requires depth and breadth, with cultural awareness being critical.

“All evangelism is about crossing cultural gaps. This is true in Birmingham, Alabama, and Abu Dhabi,” he said. “Christians in the West often live lives in a church bubble and have little to no interaction with those far from God. Fear is another challenge. We often fear that others will think less of us if we share with them the greatest news ever, ironic, isn’t it?”

To help readers apply what they learn, Understanding Evangelism includes case studies, sidebars and reflection questions.

“I have found they put practical flesh on the theoretical skeleton,” Payne said. “Such items allow the book to bend toward the practical. They enable readers to understand how principles have been applied in the real world and challenge readers to consider how to make application to their contexts.”

Payne stresses that evangelism is not limited to pastors or missionaries.

“The beauty of evangelism is no one in the Church receives a pass from sharing what they have experienced, and that is tremendous news,” he said. “Regardless of our gifts, talents, abilities, interests, histories and personalities, there is a place for everyone in sharing the gospel. Our task is to share this good news and leave the results to God.”

Summarizing his vision for evangelism in the 21st century, Payne advised: “Walk with God. Love your neighbor. Share his gospel with those far from Him. And leave the outcome in His hands.”

Understanding Evangelism is available now from Baker Academic.
