Narrative Intervention in School-Based Contexts
April 23, 3:30 p.m. – 4:40 p.m.
CHS 2206

Narrative capacity, the ability to tell or retell a story, strongly predicts academic and social success. A child's storytelling skills are culturally grounded and valued by caregivers of children with language delays. As such, narrative intervention presents a unique, evidence-based opportunity to enhance receptive and expressive language skills in a naturalistic context. During this presentation, participants will learn about the typical narrative developmental sequence, cultural influences on narrative engagement and structure, and the fundamental approach to using narratives to develop specific syntactic structures. Participants will also engage in a case study exercise to create a small-group narrative intervention plan to address each child's language needs.
