Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders 2020-21 annual review.
In the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, we hold fast to a code of values and an overarching philosophy of faith in our words and actions, excellence in our student outcomes, integrity, life-long learning, teamwork and service, which is at the core of all that we do.
Although 2020 was filled with many obstacles, we worked hard to maintain these standards and we believe that because of this our students will provide an excellent level of care for all of those they touch. We thank you for your support of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders.

Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders Hosts Prayer Parade
After being apart for nearly six months, students were still unable to closely gather together. Regardless of the circumstances, faculty and staff wanted to make sure that they were still doing their best to support students.
Students Write Letters to Brookdale Retirement Community
Amid the COVID-19 pandemic, few saw such solidarity as the members of retirement communities. Communication sciences and disorders students typically volunteer at the Brookdale Retirement Community but this year they took a different approach.
Communication Sciences and Disorders Students Partner with Girls Inc.
Undergraduate and graduate communication sciences and disorders students partnered with Girls Inc. to provide informational videos, school supplies and goodie bags with Bible verses chosen by the students.
Learning
Through the utilization of technology and simulation, students in the department experience a variety of innovative learning strategies.
Students Utilize Teletherapy Amid COVID-19 Pandemic
Teletherapy was a term that most speech language pathology students were unfamiliar with prior to 2020. The pandemic forced many practitioners, faculty and students alike to think outside the box and Caroline Rickman’21 did just that as she completed her studies.
Speech Language Pathology Students Participate in Aging Simulation
In an effort to show the challenges patients with sensory disorders face, speech language pathology students completed an innovative simulation during their cognitive communication course.

Students Hear from Tommie L. Robinson
Undergraduate and graduate students were given the opportunity to hear from widely acclaimed renowned specialist, Tommie L. Robinson, Ph.D., CCC-SLP during the department’s Above and Beyond award ceremony.
Communication Sciences and Disorders Facilities Tour
One of the jewels of the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders are the state-of-the-art labs and technologies students have access to. In an effort to keep our students and faculty safe, we created a virtual tour.
2021 Margaret L. Johnson Scholarship Recipient
The Margaret L. Johnson Scholarship provides tuition assistance for incredibly worthy students. This year, Caroline Miller, a speech language pathology student, was selected as the 2020-21 recipient.
Teamwork
We believe that training our students in an interprofessional environment and teaching them to serve their community are crucial components of their education.
Students Complete Interprofessional Aphasia Simulation
Annually, first year speech language pathology students participate in an interprofessional aphasia simulation to learn about how persons with aphasia communicate and the care they require from their caregivers.
Sensory Activities Enhance Learning at The Bell Center
SUNSSLHA members work together to organize and complete service projects for the community. This year, the student organization partnered with The Bell Center for Early Intervention Programs to provide sensory activities for story time.
